Q&A with Manor House Fine Art
29/08/2008 send to a friend
John Allsopp won a competition in North East England that’s helped him set up his own art business online, from a room at the front of his house. He’s enjoying life being his own boss and is spending quite a bit of time with Royalty.
When did you start Manor House Fine Art?
I started Manor House Fine Art, in August 2008, after researching the Royal memorabilia market for about six months. I was delighted to win a small financial grant from a competition run by NE-Life and One North East, this money helped me finance my ecommerce site. I have also received business consultancy and financial assistance from Business Link North East and the Leonard Charity Trust.
What were you doing before starting the company?
I worked within the Telecommunications Industry as a "Radio Engineer" prior to an illness, which has left me with high blood pressure. This condition does not allow me to be as active, however Art has been a great source of rehabilitation and I decided to establish my self as an Artist Publisher.
What is your area of speciality?
My speciality is Realism, where I continuously attempt to create life like Portraits and paintings. I have decided to launch my business with a Royal Family theme, Princess Diana being the first publication.
Did you go to art school, or are you self-taught?
Completely self taught over a number of years, however I did attend a local Art School to help with marketing and selling skills.
Do you sell 100% online or do you also sell through retail outlets?
My business will sell entirely from my ecommerce site, customers will benefit from lower prices and a personal service.
How much inspiration do you take from your surroundings in the North East?
I take a lot inspiration from the North East especially the coastline, seascape and landscape collections will follow my Royal collection series.
Where do you paint? In a room in the house or in the garden?
My studio is a small bedroom on the front of my house, it has a large window over looking higher ground with trees and well covered green hills.
Do any of your family members help out in the business?
I anticipate other family members joining my business in the future to help with order tracking and packaging of prints etc, however since its Launch Manor House has been run totally by myself.
What are your plans for the next 6 months?
Over the next few months I intend to complete other works featuring The Queen, Queen mother and Prince William and have the original works turned into limited edition Giclee prints.
