Q&A with Ember Regis

Robin

You may recognise Robin Powell. That’s because he appears regularly on Sky News and the BBC Politics Show. When he’s not in front of the camera, Robin is behind his home office desk, building a media relations and training business. Over to you, Robin.

When did you start the business?

In my spare time, about 10 years ago.

What were you doing before becoming your own boss?

I had a staff job as a news reporter with ITV. It was the sort of job I could have carried on doing for years, were it not for a growing suspicion that I would be better off and more fulfilled running my own company. I was right - and I've learned to follow my gut instinct ever since.

What has been your most memorable/unusual commission to date?

I was one of the first British journalists to report on conditions for detainees at Guantanamo Bay. But my most memorable assignment was in Baghdad, just as the WMD story was starting to develop. The Iraqis are a lovely people and it's appalling what they've had to endure for so long.

If a home business owner is about to appear on TV, what would be your top 3 media tips for them?

  1. Work out your key message - or two messages maximum
  2. Don't forget to mention the name of your company - you'd be surprised how many do.
  3. Relax and try to enjoy it - you'll be fine!

In your view, in 5 years time, will we be watching TV on the TV screen or via the computer screen?

Both - as well as mobile phones and on screens in public places.

What are your plans for Ember Regis over the next year?

I want to ensure that we're in the best possible place to seize the huge opportunities that economic recovery will bring... The digital media revolution is only just beginning!
