How to become a networking star
25/09/2008 send to a friend
Business networking is recognised as one of the most powerful and cost effective forms of developing new business contacts and opportunities. Barry Walker is a smooth operator who steps in to offer advice on how you can become a star of the networking scene.
Points to a star
The attraction of networking for many of its fans is that it’s primarily a ‘time’ based initiative, with little additional cost (apart from nominal membership fees if any). There are now many groups in the UK that can introduce you to like-minded individuals who can help you develop your business.
To be ‘star of the room’ you have to make sure those that you meet remember you. Develop a clear and concise understanding of your business. Know how to present your business simply, concisely and clearly so others understand exactly what you do.
The first art of selling yourself is developing the ability to listen to others. Show interest in those you meet and start to develop a conversation that you will both enjoy. Business relationships develop over time. After the event, make contact and continue the conversation.
To be a truly effective networker consider the following points:
- Best utilise your time, as it has a value. Decide which are the most appropriate events to go to for your business.
- Carry enough business cards and never run out.
- Ensure your business card reflects your business personality. Review the design if necessary and don’t be cheap when they go to print. This is the lasting impression that whoever you meet will take away with them.
- Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to other attendees. They are there for the same reason as you – to make new contacts.
- Enter the contacts you make on a database, noting where you met them.
- Use the database to keep in regular contact with the people you meet, by telephone, e-mail, and letter or even better by regular meetings.
- Don’t be selfish. By first helping others to find new business opportunities, they will thank you for it and you will be seen as the ‘mover and shaker’, the star networker.
- Attend more than one club, group, or event each month. Variety is the spice of business networking.
- Enjoy the experience.

Comment: I love networking. It's probably because I'm such a people watcher. I used to be a member of lots of networking groups from very informal once a month type things to early morning weekly focussed ones.
I once won a 'Networker of the Month' award from BNI (Business Network International) because of how much I gave back to fellow networkers.
I never use traditional advertising. All my work comes through networking. It can be daunting when you first start but I made lots of friends and business contacts and everyone is there for the same reason - there is lots of support.
Now that I live and work from the middle of nowhere I still network, just not face to face - it's all online.
