Katrina Smith is the boss of her own home based business, True Colours Interiors. We introduce Katrina on the site and reveal her top tips for creating conducive home office interiors.
About Katrina
Prior to setting up my business I worked for a tour operator as a Quality Services Manager, travelling around the world assessing hotels, villas and apartments for quality and health and safety. It was a great job but with the arrival of my first child I decided travelling was no longer for me. I wanted to do something a little more creative, and flexible. Hence taking a course in interior design.
This was my first venture into self employment. My organisation skills have come in handy and a very supportive husband who just happens to be in IT, so helps with the IT side of the business.
I'm very fortunate to have a decent sized office in the house that overlooks the garden. I share my office with Rupert, the children's hamster, who has to listen to my mutterings all day long (perhaps thats why he sleeps most of the time!). I'm surrounded by book shelves which house my many brochures and catalogues on different aspects of interior design. As well as the main overhead light I have a light which shines directly onto the desk which is essential. My wipe board is within easy reach of the desk so I can keep up to date with what is happenning to my clients. I'm currently juggling 17 clients, all in different stages of progress. The walls of the office are painted a very light blue, but this is about to change - I find it too restful. I want something that will put a smile on my face as I walk in - I'll probably go for a terracotta.
Tip top interiors
My top 3 design tips for a home office would be:
- Ensure you have enough storage space - as much as possible without overcrowding your work space. Storage doesn't have to look officey if you don't want it too - there are some great home storage items out there.
- Invest in a comfortable chair - a swivel chair is great for moving around the room - although not so easy if you have carpet.
- Look at your lighting - is the room bright enough for what you have to do in your workspace. Get some good task lighting. And if possible place your desk where you'll get some natural light - this is so uplifting!
All the colours of the rainbow
As for colours, this will depend on the type of person you are. For example colours such as blues and greens are from the cool pallette and are calming. They won't distract you from work and will help your concentration. Whereas warm colours such as orange, yellow and red are invigorating and stimulate. They are great for creative areas, although look at muted shades rather than bright ones, as you don't want to distract yourself too much.
