An expert’s life is full of beginnings
25/09/2008 send to a friend
Something I read on work/life blog, Zen Habits, stopped me in my tracks and made me think for a while. The post was about the life of an expert. In particular, an expert who’s taken up kite surfing.
Beginning to wonder
The line that made me stop and think went like this:
“I’m an expert at many things. And I’m sick of it. Being an expert, that is. Because being an expert is boring. That’s why I started kite surfing a few month ago. I wanted to be a beginner again.”
It appeared on a very popular blog called Zen Habits and was penned by Mary Jaksch who is a:
“Zen master, psychotherapist, and author. She’s a Karate Black Belt, and loves dancing Argentine tango in skimpy dresses.”
Mary sounds like a lady you don’t want to mess with.
But the thing is, I don’t agree with what she says.
If you’re an expert in your field (which so many of our readers are) there’s a new beginning almost every day as you discover new things about your area of expertise and meet new people.
I’d like to call myself an expert on the topic of starting and growing a business from home. Every day I find out something new about this topic and it is never, ever boring.
But maybe I’m being too narrow-minded; maybe I should stop thinking so much and go surfing. Where’s my kite. – Emma Jones

Comment: I think you can do both. For what it's worth, I'm an expert on shedworking and I don't see what's wrong with that (as you say, it's not like I know absolutely everything about it). But on the other hand, I do think it's healthy to have other interests/things you're quite good at and I'd like to think that people also regard me as a half-decent snooker player, somebody who can make nice jam, and a supporter of Telford United as well as somebody who bangs on about shedlike atmospheres all the time.
