3rd Places: Your letters

San Sharma returns with more news and reviews of '3rd Places' - places to work outside of the office and the home. This week, your e-mails.

Last week

Last week, I kicked off the first in a new series of articles for Enterprise Nation - '3rd Places' - with a review of Starbucks as a place to work outside of the home office.

My review concluded that while the coffee shop was a comfortable place to work, the whole experience proved quite costly. The Wi-Fi was expensive, although fast and reliable, and the coffee and cake took pounds from my wallet but none from my waist!

Your letters

I also invited readers to send in their experiences of working outside of the home office. And that's exactly what you did! So, thanks to everyone who wrote in.

The two that I'd like to share with you today will interest both the wired and wireless amongst us. The first, from Andrew Corbett, is the recommendation of a cheaper Wi-Fi alternative.

Cheaper Wi-Fi

Andrew runs, PerfectArc, a web development company in Shropshire, and wrote in to recommend BT Openzone. I'd been aware of BT's Wi-Fi offering for years - it'd been a pioneer in the industry - but I had no idea it was so affordable.

"500 minutes for a fiver," Andrew wrote. "That's a penny a minute."

There are over 30,000 Openzone hotspot worldwide and they're not limited to coffee shops. Find out more on the link below - and about Andrew's business too.

Your own coffee shop

The second, from Caroline Lashley, promotes the virtues of the local library and third places where you can make your own coffee!

"The other place I use (and I pay for) is the rather posh Members’ Room at the Chartered Institute Of Public Relations in Piccadilly, where not only can I use their laptops and Wi-Fi but if I bring in my own supplies of tea, powered milk and, of course, biscuits, can work quite happily until I’m elegantly turfed out at 6pm..."

Keep your e-mails coming in and I'll be back next week with more news, reviews and issues about all things third. – San Sharma

Comment: A fantastic free workplace is all Village Leisure sites which offer free wi-fi access. I used it recently without any time restriction or need to be a member. With a cafe on each site coffee and snacks are at hand plus free daily papers when you need a break. I found working in a leisure environment quite inspiring and creative. The energy around you is upbeat and that boosted my productivity too. I'd even go as far to say it went quite swimmingly for me!!

Comment: Thanks for the tip, John! It's hard to come across free wi-fi, so thanks for sharing with our readers.
